We are currently open for submissions of speculative fiction novellas – stories between 17,500 and 40,000 words in length. Please submit the completed manuscript via our online form. You will receive an automated response letting you know we have your novella. You should hear something further from us within 60 days of submitting.
We want speculative fiction, particularly science fiction (hard, soft, near-future, etc), urban fantasy, magic realism, mad science, and apocalypse tales. We like fiction with layers of meaning; stories that are odd or different without being too strange to understand. We enjoy interstitial, genre-bending, and “literary SF/F” writing. As always, we want beautiful, dark, unusual, and meaningful.
We rarely like sword and sorcery type fantasy, aren’t interested in “slasher” type horror, don’t care for religious themes (which includes demons/the devil), and please! Do not send us a romance, no matter what setting it is in, as that just wastes your time and ours.
We encourage diversity in publishing: authors are chosen regardless of sex, gender, race or ethnicity. Non-US authors, or authors who usually work in a different genre, are also welcome.
We publish only original fiction; please, no reprints.
Submit your completed novella via our form in .doc or .odt format.
Before you send us your work, take a minute to read our post about submission formatting, this post with some answers to frequently asked questions about the submissions process, and our interview with Duotrope. That should give you an idea of what we’re looking for and how we want to see it.
We will begin publishing novellas in 2013, first releasing each novella as an individual ebook four times a year, and then publishing a print collection of the year’s novellas.
Payment and Rights
We’re buying First Worldwide English-language rights for print and digital (ebook).
For the individual ebooks, we’re paying 50% of net sales.
